BECKETT, Samuel. Autograph manuscript of his playlet Come and Go , frequent cancellations, emendations and additions in blue, black, red and green ink, a number of tables permutating the letters A, B, C, or lines in red, green and blue ink, 27 pages, 4to , of which 13 cancelled, on graph paper in an exercise book, card covers, title inscribed in another hand on upper cover. Beckett's 'dramaticule' Come and Go (1976) exemplifies the tendencies towards extreme concentration and brevity in his later work: in its final English form, the play contains only 127 words, of which 103 are spoken in colourless voices, 'as low as compatible with audibility'. The present manuscript demonstrates the scale of material from which that text was distilled, as well as elucidating Beckett's dramatic technique: Breon Mitchell ('Art in Microcosm: The Manuscript Stages of Beckett's Come and Go ', Modern Drama 1976) discusses the existence of at least 14 stages of composition for the work, subsequent to the present notebook. R.L. Admussen ( The Samuel Beckett manuscripts: a study , 1979) notes the 'light-hearted and expansive' nature of the early drafts, and their gradual evolution towards 'sombreness and reduction'. The later drafts of the work are chiefly at University of Washington, St Louis, Missouri.
