RUTTER, JOHN. 1796-1851. Delineations of Fonthill and its Abbey. London: Charles Knight and Co., 1823. 4to. (341 x 283 mm). xxvi, 127, [1] pp. With hand-colored engraved frontispiece, hand-colored aquatint title, second letterpress title with arms of William Thomas Beckford, 10 engraved plates, hand-colored aquatint plate, one large folding lithograph plan colored in outline and 12 wood-engraved text vignettes. Half morocco and sprinkled boards, spine gilt in compartments. Blank leaves foxed, some non-colored plates foxed, extremities rubbed. Provenance: Peter Summers (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY. Fonthill Abbey, also known as "Beckford's Folly," was the home that William Thomas Beckford had built for himself in the style of a Gothic cathedral. The building was breathtaking, but nearly nothing remains of it today as Beckford's insistence on its expeditious construction incurred many mistakes on the parts of the builders, leading ultimately to the building crumbling into bits and pieces. This is the fullest published contemporary record of Fonthill. Rutter obtained an introduction to Beckford to visit the Abbey and in the end, Beckford collaborated with Rutter to write the text. Abbey Scenery 418; Lowndes R2159.
