FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY. Fonthill Abbey, also known as "Beckford's Folly," was the home that William Thomas Beckford had built for himself in the style of a Gothic cathedral. The building was breathtaking, but nearly nothing remains of it today as Beckford's insistence on its expeditious construction incurred many mistakes on the parts of the builders, leading ultimately to the building crumbling into bits and pieces. This is the fullest published contemporary record of Fonthill. Rutter obtained an introduction to Beckford to visit the Abbey and in the end, Beckford collaborated with Rutter to write the text.
