BELLOTTO, Bernardo (called Canaletto, 1721-1780). [Five plates from the suite Huit paysages Italiens. N.p.: circa 1741-2]. Five etched plates, tipped onto backing sheets and individually window-mounted. Unbound within modern red cloth drop-back box. A fine selection of four early impressions and one from circa 1800 (see number 4 below) from Bellotto's suite of eight views of Italianate landscapes. Although essentially capriccios some elements are identifiable: for example, the church of S. Giustina, Padua, appears in two plates. Bernardo Bellotto was born in Venice, the nephew of Canaletto, and lived in Italy until about 1746 when he moved to Dresden. From then until his death from apoplexy in 1780 he worked at the courts of the Elector of Saxony and the Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria, with a short sojourn at the Russian court. There is a general consensus that the drawings of related subjects can be dated to 1741-42, but there is controversy about the dating of the etchings. Bellotto, according to de Vesme, executed the plates in Italy and took them with him when he went to Germany. De Vesme 1-5; S.Kozakiewicz. Bernardo Bellotto genannt Canaletto . Recklinghausen: 1972, vol.II, cat.nos. 124, 39, 108, 41, 44. The selection (with titles according to de Vesme) comprises : 1. [ La Rotonde ]. (S. 170 x 243mm.; P. 141 x 202mm.) [V.1; K.124]. Two small repaired tears from lower margin, just touching image area, five small repaired holes to lower blank margin. Provenance : collezione Allianello (ink stamp on verso). 2. [ L'église aux cinq coupoles ]. (I. 141 x 203mm.) [V.2; K.39]. Cut to edge of plate mark, small neatly repaired areas to sky, extensive strengthening on verso. Provenance : section of ink collector's stamp on lower right of image. 3. [ Le pont près de la porte d'une ville ]. (I. 141 x 201mm.) [V.3 2nd state; K.108]. Cut to edge of plate mark, extensive strengthening to verso. Provenance : section of ink collector's stamp on lower right of image. 4. [ L'église aux trois coupoles ]. Thin paper. (S. 216 x 289mm.; P. 145 x 205mm.) [V.4 2nd state; K.41]. Provenance : 19th-century German purple ink stamp on verso. 5. [ Le paysage à l'arbre mort ]. Partial watermark: 'IM' visible. (I. 142 x 202mm.) [V.5; K.44]. Cut to edge of plate mark, small repaired tear to image just above house on left. Provenance : section of ink collector's stamp on lower middle of image.
