BENJAMIN, Asher (1773-1845). The Country Builder’s Assistant: Fully Explaining the Best Methods for Striking Regular and Quirked Mouldings ... Boston: Spotswood and Etheridge for the author and Alexander Thomas, 1798. Small 4° (197 x 154 mm). 37 engraved plates. (Some browning, staining and offsetting, plate 33 lacking top portion, some tears occasionally touching plate, paint to verso of one plate.) Contemporary calf (some light wear, joints starting). Provenance : Reuben Dadi (signature on verso of plate 37); James Grote Vanderpool (signature on pastedown). Second edition, published one year after the Greenfield, 1797 edition (see lot 22), expanded to include 7 additional plates. Plate 33 bears a strong resemblance to the First Congregational Church in Bennington, Vermont, which Benjamin designed in 1806. With no explanatory text leaves for plates 9-10, 17-18, and 29-33 as issued. RARE : according to American Book Prices Current , only one complete copy of this work has sold at auction in the last 35 years: Christie’s New York, 3 December 2010, lot 360. Evans 33399.
