BENYOWSKY, Maurice Auguste (1746-1786). Voyages et me´moires de Maurice Auguste, comte de Benyowsky . Paris: F. Buisson, 1791. First French edition of Benyowsky’s popular chronicle of his extraordinary adventures. After being exiled to Siberia by the Russians, Benyowsky led 70 prisoners on an escape mission out of Kamchatka, sailing to Japan, Formosa, and China, before being commissioned by the French government to found a colony on Madagascar. His account offers interesting (and perhaps occasionally fantastical) descriptions of Siberia, the Russian fur trade, and the customs of Kamchatka. Cordier Japonica 454; Cordier Sinica 276-277. 2 volumes, octavo (197 x 121mm). Half-titles (light spots and waterstains, heavier in vol. 2, last few leaves of each vol. stained in margins). Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt (expertly restored, upper joint of vol. 2 splitting).
