BENZONI, Girolamo (b. 1519). Der Newenn Weldt und Indianischen Königreichs, newe unnd wahrhaffte History . Translated from Latin by Nicolas Höniger. Basel: Sebastian Henricpetri, 1579. 2 o (325 x 211 mm). Title printed in red and black with fraktur capitals, gothic types, shoulder notes in italic, large woodcut printer's device at end. (Title and last leaf browned, occasional light foxing.) Contemporary limp vellum (lacking pair of fore-edge ties, small hole to backstrip). Provenance : Archduke Ferdinand (?future Emperor Ferdinand II, 1578-1637): two early inscriptions on title of first work [see below], "Bibliotheca Archid. Ferdinandi I"; written in the same hand above Benzoni's name on the title of this work is the word "haereticum". First Edition in German of Benzoni's Historia del Mondo Nuovo , first published at Vicenza in 1465. Höniger's translation was made from the Latin version published at Geneva in 1578. In the 1550s and 60s Benzoni spent fourteen years traveling throughout Haiti, Cuba, Panama, Colombia and Peru. His first-hand account of the customs and religions of the Native Americans of these regions and of the history of the Spanish settlements there provided scathing evidence of the abuses of European rule, as summarized in the title of this edition: "... the history, deeds, and strict and severe regime of the Spanish against the Indians, [whose] unbelievably huge wealth of gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, emeralds and other riches was stolen by the Spanish...". The popularity of the work, which was translated into French, German and Dutch, helped revise contemporary views of early Spanish America. Alden and Landis 579/3; Sabin 4797. [ Bound after :] GUICCIARDINI, Lodovico (1521-1589). Niderlands Beschreibung... . Translated from Italian by Daniel Federman. Basel: Sebastian Henricpetri, 1580. Title in red and black, large fraktur initials, woodcut ornamental tail-pieces, 4 double-page woodcut maps, map titles on rectos each within a different woodcut historiated border (one full-page), numerous text woodcuts, including a few small maps, from Henricpetri's general stock. (Occasional light browning or foxing, a few small marginal tears.) First Edition in German of Guicciardini's Descrittione dei tutti i Paesi Bassi (Antwerp 1567), an important survey of the topography, culture and commerce of the sixteenth-century Netherlands.
