Title, blank [4] 304pp.; title, [18], 208, [12]pp. Engraved portrait of Bethencourt on verso of A2. The two works bound in one volume. Original vellum, manuscript title to spine. Condition : quires Aa, Cc, Ggii-vii loose but holding, scattered underlining to text, some slight toning edges; vellum lightly soiled, chipped at back cover, lacking ties. Acquisition : purchased from Librairie Thomas-Scheler (1999), FF30,000 ($5,000). an americanum of prime importance . Pierre Bergeron's treatise on navigation and voyages is a comphrehensive history of world exploration from the earliest days of discovery, with an emphasis on the French voyages. Chapters discuss, in some detail, the New France expeditions under Sieur de Mont, Lescarbot, Poutrincourt, Champlain, and Cartier. The French voyages to Florida of Sebastien “Gavot,” Jean Ribaut and the sad tale of Laudonnière are also included. Other European discoverers are discussed, whether the better known Spanish, Portuguese, and English expeditions as one might expect, but also present are the Russian, Swedish and Dutch voyages, not only to the Americas and the Far East. The second title is a history of the conquest of the Canaries by Bethencourt, as recounted by two chaplains in his household. The Traicté de la Navigation occasionally appears separately, and has always been sought after, in fact a copy was sold at the sale of Théophile Gautier's library for 101 fr. There have been no copies in Anglo-American auctions in the last 30 years. “. . . rare and much appreciated.
