Berlioz has stood, unsuccessfully, for a vacancy at the Académie des beaux arts, though he won't give up trying: 'À une autre fois maintenant. Car j'y suis résolu, je me présenterai jusqu'à ce que mort s'en suive'. He encourages von Bülow to come to Paris, in spite of a prospective position at the Polish court: 'Vous savez si bien le Français que vous pourrez comprendre le Parisien; et vous trouverez peut être amusant de voir comment tout ce monde d'écrivains danse sur la phrase, comment ceux qui osent encore accepter le titre de Philosophes dansent sur l'idée'. He looks forward to hearing von Bülow's comments on the score of Benvenuto Cellini , a work whose bad luck he laments ('cette oeuvre a décidément du malheur; le Roi de Saxe se fait tuer au moment où l'on allait s'occuper d'elle à Dresde'), citing Virgil, and rhapsodising about his art, comparing him with 'ce farceur de Neron', who nevertheless had one moment of genius when he burnt Rome. The letter concludes with the opening of the new season at the Paris opera, including some cutting remarks about the mezzo-soprano Rosine Stoltz ('je l'ai prise en effet pour une apparition , tant elle a l'air cadavéreuse. Sa voix aussi a subi du temps l'irréparable outrage; quant à sa méthode et à son gout ils habitent toujours, comme les ombres du Tartare, les bords du Cocythe, en attendant qu'ils viennent animer un vrai talent'). The management of the opera had refused tickets for the reopening to all critics, who have now responded by declaring 'une guerre du silence'. Published in the Correspondance Générale , ed.
