A volume containing the Bible and the Metrical Psalms, 1583-1584, comprising:
The Bible translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke (Two right profitable and fruitfull concordances). London: Christopher Barker 1583 (NT: 1584), both titles within woodcut border [McKerrow & Ferguson 158], preliminaries printed in red and black, woodcut device at end of Old Testament and at beginning and end of concordances, title-page crudely reattached, occasional light soiling,small holes in Ee6-7 with slight loss, lower corner of Mm6 torn with loss, lower corner of [2]H1 torn just touching text
The whole booke of Psalmes, collected into english meeter by Thomas Sternhold, Iohn Hopkins & others; conferred with the Hebrue, with apt notes to sing them withall. London: John Day 1583, title within woodcut border, typeset music, lacking quire P4
2 works in one volume, 4to (216 x 155mm.), stamped calf gilt c.1640 to a centre and cornerpiece design with the initials MW, stubs from two pairs of silk ties, spine gilt in compartments, gilt edges, joints and spine worn, upper cover almost detached; sold not subject to return
This edition, with title-pages dated 1584 and 1583, does not match exactly the copies recorded in STC and DMH; it is one of numerous quarto editions issued around this time by Christopher Barker The text is the Geneva version.
For a binding with the same centrepiece made from small tools, see Davis Gift 92, dating to c. 1640.
