BIBLE, English. The Byble in Englysh, that is to saye the Content of all the Holy Scrypture, both of the Olde and Newe Testament with a Prologe thereinto, made by the Reuerende Father in God, Thomas Archebyshop of Cantorbury . London: Edward Whitchurch, 28 May 1541 Five parts in one volume, 2° (364 x 250mm.). Black letter, double column, 62 lines. Titles to parts 2, 3 and 4 with text in red and black within border of 16 woodblocks (4th title torn with loss at foot, mounted), New Testament title within elaborate woodcut border with Henry VIII, Cranmer and Cromwell distributing bibles, the arms of the last erased, the people calling 'Vivat Rex' and 'God save the King', woodcut illustrations in the text, woodcut initials. (General title and final leaf in facsimile, premininary leaves, from another copy, torn and repaired with some text in facsimile, some other leaves with neat restoration occasionally affecting text, some leaves rather browned or soiled, a few leaves with small tears and wormholes, upper margin trimmed occasionally affecting head-line and pagination.) Modern old-style embossed morocco, spine in compartments with title stamped in gilt, vellum liner and doublures, g.e. Fifth edition of the Great Bible, the fourth with Cranmer's prologue. Copies of the seven editions of the Great Bible frequently have mixed sheets. STC 2074; DMH 61.
