BIBLE, English. The Holy Byble conteining the Olde Testament and the Newe. London: Christopher Barker 1585. 2 volumes bound in one, 2 o (385 x 268 mm). Title within elaborate woodcut border, genealogies, calendar printed in red and black, full-page woodcut illustration of the Garden of Eden, printed in double column throughout, woodcut initials. (Title laid down, first few leaves reinforced along margin, some light soiling to first and last leaves, light marginal dampstaining, trimmed closely affecting a few letters.) Old calf (rebacked). Provenance : Robert Cox (owner's name and purchase information dated 1658); Edward Akroyd (armorial bookplate). The first Bishops' Bible, a revision of the Great Bible undertaken by Archbishop Parker and eight bishops, appeared under the imprint of Richard Jugge in 1568.
