BIBLE, in Latin -- Biblia, edited by Robert Estienne. Paris: Robert Stephanus, 1540 [part III dated 1539; part IV dated 1538]. 4 parts in 2 volumes, 2° (402 x 280mm). Titles to each part with woodcut allegorical illustrations, large criblé initials, woodcut illustrations including 5 full-page (first title repaired on verso and stained mainly at margin, some mainly marginal staining to first few leaves touching a few letters, a few light stains and spots, Ciii in vol. one repaired at lower margin). Contemporary calf (rather worn, joints split, some surface cracking). Provenance : Gervas Holmes (armorial bookplate) -- Gawdy Hall Library (label) -- Paul Howard Beves (ex-libris sticker). Adams 1022; Armstrong 72-75; Bernard 215-16; Darlow & Moule 6117; Schreiber 59. "The third Estienne folio Bible, for which the text was revised from additional MS sources; a list given at the end of the preface enumerates at least 16 MSS and 3 printed editions. This edition contains the first printing of the Prayer of Manasses, in Greek and Latin. It is the text of this monumental edition which became the foundation of the official Roman vulgate ... This is the only illustrated Bible issued by Robert Estienne, and the second of only five illustrated books which he produced" (Schreiber). (2)
