CONTEMPORARY PERHAPS LYONESE, LIGHT BROWN CALF, GILT, PAINTED AND STAINED, the covers of each volume decorated slightly differently to a fine pattern of interlaced fillets, azured and open tools, stained black or painted with green or white paint, the resulting central panels on the upper covers titled in gilt, the central irregular shield-shaped panels on the lower covers with the initials A.B. surmounted by a joined pair of upraised wings, spines uniformly tooled: seven compartments with raised bands, each compartment ruled with small centrally-placed flower-head tool, g.e. (very neat repairs to joints, corners and head and foot of spine, small section of leather lacking from one band on spine of the Prophets volume, occasional very slight chipping to the paintwork). Provenance : A.B. (binding); notes in Italian in an unidentified hand in the Pentateuch; C.R., within a circle (unidentified collector's stamp in New Testament, not in Lugt). A VERY FINE SET OF MOSAÏQUÉE EN CIRE BINDINGS. Single bindings of this type are scarce, sets are of the utmost rarity.
