Bible, in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Italy (probably Tuscany), mid-twelfth century] a very large bifolium, 514mm. by 344mm., two columns, 40 lines, a fine large rounded Carolingian minuscule (praegothica textualis), (a) Judges 19:9 – 20:29 and (b) capitula to Kings and Kings 1:1-6, 2-line initials and running-titles in red, 2-line incipit and opening words in calligraphic lombardic majuscules in red, very large decorated initial, 13-line and extending to full height of the page, in complex interlace and geometric design including a large bird and infilled with elaborate foliage in colours including four birds, all on a blue ground outlined in red, worn (especially on the page with initial), creased and edges defective from use as a wrapper for documents apparently dated 1567, hessian binding
