Fine historiated woodcut initial at beginning of each book. (Inner margin of general title repaired, title soiled slightly with a small area abraded where signature removed on fore-margin, few wormholes penetrating title and first half of book occasionally catching letters, some minor marginal dampstains.) Modern half calf gilt, edges gilt. Provenance : early inscription on title -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 17 November 1941) -- donated to SMS 1942. FIRST EDITION OF THE ZURICH LATIN BIBLE. "A Latin translation from the Hebrew of the Jewish canonical books was begun by Leo Juda. After eighteen years' toil he died (in 1542), leaving the completion of his task to Theodor Bibliander, who translated Ezekiel, xli-xlviii; Daniel; Job; Ps. ciii-cl; Ecclesiastes; and the Song of Solomon. The Zurich version of the Apocrypha was made by Pierre Cholin. The New Testament was a revision of Erasmus' version prepared by Rudolf Gualter. The whole Bible made up of these three distinct versions, was edited by Conrad Pellican" (Darlow & Moule). Adams B-1030; Darlow & Moule 6124 (but with Froschover's heraldic device on general title).
