Contemporary blue straight-grained morocco, gilt arms of the Duke of Devonshire at center of sides, wide gilt fillet round sides, compartments of spine ruled in gilt with a crowned D in top compartment, gilt Greek key pattern turn-ins, gilt edges (joints and foot of spine in vol. I worn). Provenance : Duke of Devonshire (binding and Chatsworth book-label).

THE CHATSWORTH COPY, A LARGE-PAPER COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BLUE MOROCCO of the Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, a codex dating from the fifth century and written on vellum in an uncial hand. It contains, in both Greek and Latin, most of the four gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. Written one column per page, the codex contains 406 extant leaves from, perhaps, an original 534.
