BIBLE, Polyglot. [Biblia Sacra Hebraice, Chaldaice, Graece, & Latine, Philippi II. Reg. Cathol. pietate et studio de Sacrosanctae Ecclesiae usum] . Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1569-1572. Volumes II-V and VII only (of 8), bound in ten volumes, 2° (415 x 290mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM, half-title in vol.II & V, engraved title in vol.V, woodcut border to fly-title in vol.II-III, final privilege leaf in vol.II, final blank in vol.III & IV, blank Tt6 and final imprint leaf in vol.V, blank p8 in vol.VII. (Vol.II & IV lack engraved title, vol.III lacks half-title and following blank, vol.IV lacks half-title, vol.V lacks blank +8, vol.VII lacks final 12 leaves of 'Idiotismi', some slight dust-soiling.) Dark blue morocco, spines in compartments with gilt lettering, gilt inner dentelles, vellum doublures and liners, by Hering (scuffed at extremities), g.e. The Plantin Polyglot is the second great Polyglot Bible. Produced under the patronage of Philip II of Spain, it is also known as the Royal Polyglot. Its editor, the great oriental scholar, Benedictus Arias, Montanus, consulted widely in preparing the text, and, like the preparation for the Complutensian Polyglot, many manuscripts and printed books were used in establishing the text. The Complutensian Bible provided a foundation for the Plantin Polyglot, and it was used principally in conjunction with other printed editions such as Bomberg's Venice edition of the Hebrew text, the Aldine edition of the Greek, and the Widmanstadt edition of the Syriac. Arias also consulted the many manuscripts at Alcalá, where he had been a student, which had been gathered by Cardinal Ximenes for the earlier Polyglot. Arias himself corrected the text at Plantin's press, and the collaboration between editor and printer resulted in this fine specimen of both scholarship and printing. Thirteen copies on vellum are known to have been printed, and among those surviving are copies in the Vatican, the Escurial, and at Salamanca, Madrid and Paris. The copy described by Van Praet ( Bibliothéque de Roi I, 1) is also an incomplete set on vellum, supplemented by vols. 7 and 8 on paper, as was a set offered for sale in London in 1817, missing vol. 1 and with vols. 7 and 8 also on paper. The Bute copy comprises the early prophets to Maccabees, the New Testament, and the volume with the Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament with Latin commentary; it lacks the Pentateuch and the two other volumes of 'Apparatus Sacer'. Darlow & Moule 1422; Adams B-970. (10)
