Hollar, 1657, double-page plan of Jerusalem by Hollar, 1656, 2 double-page engravings of the Temple by W. Hollar, 1657, double-page engraving of religious artifacts by W. Hollar, 1656, one page floor-plan of the Temple, and prefatory material with woodcut alphabets, etc. Contemporary mottled calf (rebacked, some wear to edges). Provenance : James William Ellsworth (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from A.S.W. Rosenbach, Philadelphia, 28 June 1941) -- donated to SMS 1941. THE WALTON POLYGLOT, with the so-called "Loyal" preface, in which the assistance of Oliver Cromwell in allowing the paper for the work to be imported free of duty is not mentioned. The Ethiopic and Persian languages are here added for the first time in a complete Polyglot Bible. Brian Walton was educated at Magdalene College and Peterhouse, Cambridge, after which he entered the church. Ejected from his livings in 1641, he suffered imprisonment in 1642, and subsequently studied Oriental languages at Oxford.
