BIBLE, Slavonic. Evangelie ili Blagovestvovanie Gospoda Boga i Spasa Nashego Iisusa Khrista (Gospels or the Good Tidings of Our God and Saviour Jesus Christ). Kiev: Press of the Pecherskaia Lavra, December, 1697. 2° (364 x 237mm.). Title printed in red and black within woodcut border incorporating a view of the Cathedral, verso of title with woodcut illustration of the icon of the Dormition, four full-page illustrations of the Evangelists by Ilia and the master TT, 36 small woodcut illustrations from 31 blocks in the text, woodcut headpieces and initials, headings and some notations printed in red. (Some leaves slightly soiled, a few marginal tears.) Maroon velvet over old wooden boards with metal edging, the upper cover applied with gilt metal repoussé and engraved shaped and openwork plaque with image in silver of the Crucifixion with seraphim and openwork decoration (the flanking panels lack the engraved images of Saints Peter and Paul, and lacking two raised openwork corner decorations), with similar oval cornerpieces of the Evangelists, within applied chased border, the lower cover with four repoussé lobed feet with applied scroll openwork decoration (lacks the central panel), the metal spine applied with scroll openwork decoration and rosettes, with metal hinges, edges gilt with gauffered scrolls (joints broken). Provenance : Agafiia Gapovich (?) and family of Priluts dated 1698 (inscription at foot of first 25 leaves of text; given to the Church of the Birth of the Mother of god by Deacon Petr Simonovich Piskunov 1867 (inscription on p.187). First edition of the altar Gospels printed at the Kievo-Pecheskaia Lavra by Archimandrite Meletii Vuiakhevich, during the reign of Peter the Great and of Patriarch Adrian of Moscow. Guseva et al. Ukrainian Books in Cyrillic Type XVI-XVIII centuries 165; Sopikov/Rogozhin 219; Undol'skii 1220.
