Bifolium from a Cistercian Breviary, in Latin, illuminated manuscript in Latin on parchment [France (Picardy, perhaps Amiens), c. 1290] 2 conjoined leaves, each with double column of 25 lines in a tall and spiky early gothic bookhand, capitals touched in red and formed of elaborate penstrokes, red rubrics, initials in blue or pink heightened with white penwork and dots and enclosing coloured foliage sprays on gold grounds, modern pencil foliation 147 and 153, small spots, else excellent condition, each leaf: 160 by 104mm. Other leaves from this charming book have appeared in Maggs, Bulletin, 20, nos. 42-3, cat. 1262, 1998, no. 13; Sothebys, 19 June 2001, lot 10 and 6 December in the same year, lot 2, 5 July 2005, lot 19, 29 June 2007, lot 4, 3 December 2013, lot 13 and 7 July 2015, lot 14, as well as our rooms, 6 December 2017, lot 23. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century inscriptions in the parent volume suggest that it was once in Vouvray, east of Tours in the Loire valley.
