Bifolium with four calligraphic panels, in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on polished paper [probably Safavid Persia, c. 1730 AD] Single leaf, showing 2 illuminated panels on each side, comprising: (i) two cubes of square kufic (ii) three lines of knotted kufic (iii & iv) each with one line of foliate knotted kufic, all illuminated with polychrome flowers against a gold background, panels ruled in gold and blue, panels (i) & (ii) with spiraling vines heightened in gold decorating borders, total 185 by 160mm. (each panel c.114 by 60mm.); in frame This bifolium contains prayers and verses from the Qur'an in an exceptionally decorative form. The leaf probably contains extracts from a book of Dua, or perhaps a Dala'il al-Khayrat, commissioned for a royal household or patron. Such sophisticated levels of calligraphy are rarely seen in bound volumes as they are considered pieces of art in themselves.
