BINDING -- Lodovico BIGI, called Pittorio. Psalterio Davitico per Lodovico Pittorio da Ferrara moralmente in forma de Omeliario con lo latino intertexto declarato. Bologna: heirs of Benedetto and Ettore Faeli, 2 October 1524. 4° (213 x 155mm). Collation: a-z, & 8 , \\j 6 . 40 lines, Roman letter, with capital spaces and guide letters. Title within decorative woodcut border, woodcut printer's device on recto of final leaf. CONTEMPORARY BOLOGNESE BINDING of dark brown morocco over pasteboard, elaborately tooled in blind, covers panelled with triple fillets, with at the centre the Sacred Monogram ( yhs ) within a panel with ends formed from a single fine arabesque tool, two of the outer panels decorated with, respectively, a foliage roll and repeated use of a double-interlocking circle tool, the remaining panels sparingly decorated with small flowerhead or star tools, the spine in four compartments with double raised bands, decorated with a simple repeat pattern of the flowerhead tool surrounded by four stars, edges stained, headbands of alternate bands of blue and white thread (clasps lacking, light worming to surface of lower cover). Provenance : count Battista Bentivolus [i.e Bentivoglio] (inscription, dated 1525, noting the gift of the book to a religious brother at St.Peter's Bologna); Giuseppe Martini (pencilled collation note). A RARE SURVIVAL, IN FINE CONDITION, with a distinguished provenance. The large arabesque tool in the central panel on the covers links the binding to a group, noted by de Marinis, made for German students in Bologna on works dated between 1494 and 1522 (the same tool appears on a binding for cardinal Giulio de'Medici before 1523). (De Marinis vol. II pp. 5-6, and plates CCXVI, CCXVII, CCXXII). Sander 1018; Cat. Colombina V, 336.
