BLAEU, JAN. Kaert-boeck van alderhande generale en particuliere Landt ende Zee-kaerten en Kusten van de geheele Werelt. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu 1659 [= between 1665 and 1672]. [ with ] LOON, JAN VAN. Klaer Lichtende Noort-ster ofte Zee Atlas. Amsterdam: Johannes van Loon 1661 [but see above]. 2 parts in one vol., folio, 507 x 327mm. (19 15/16 x 12 7/8in.), publisher's vellum, covers gilt-panelled with Blaeu's globe device within central gilt cartouche, g.e., quite worn, joints splitting, upper cover loose, fore-edge board edge of upper cover severely abraded, covers warped, scraped and rubbed, endpapers renewed, without the final map ("Terra Nova") listed in the table of contents (see below), on guards throughout, lower margins of the van Loon text leaves extended, 12 maps with tears, repairs, or adhesive damage incurring some loss, numerous marginal tears or fold breaks, most folds of the first part reinforced, the first 20 maps and a few of the last maps creased and with edges frayed and chipped, foxing, marginal staining and soiling . Contents Part 1: Engraved allegorical general title showing the four continents (used in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and other Blaeu atlases), 2-page letterpress index for both parts (the final map [no. 38 of the van Loon], lacking in this copy, crossed out in black crayon), 65 double-page and 3 folding engraved maps, of which most originally issued in atlases published by the Blaeus from 1630 to 1662, with 4 reengravings of maps by Mercator, Ortelius and Visscher (2). Part 2: Letterpress title on pasted-down slip within central cartouche of engraved architectonic title showing the figures of Edward Wright and Pedro de Medina 16 pages text from an unidentified edition of Donckert's Zee-Atlas ("Kort Verhaal Van't begin en de voortgang des Scheepvaart...", A-C2, 8 pp.; and "Korte Verklaring des asdeeling, gestaltenis, ende eigenschappen des Aardbodems", A-C 2, 8 pp.); and 37 (of 38) double-page engraved charts, mostly from van Loon's first atlas (cf. Koeman IV, Loon 1), with 4 maps from 3 editions of Donckert's Zee-Atlas published between 1660 and 1664 ( mounted ); BOTH PARTS COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND with some later additional coloring, the titles and embellishments fully colored, the maps colored in outline, each map numbered in brown ink on the recto of the first leaf (the parts separately numbered). AN UNRECORDED ISSUE OF A BLAEU ATLAS, INCORPORATING MOST OF JAN VAN LOON'S FIRST SEA ATLAS. The maps of the first part include 1 world map (Blaeu's 1662 double-hemisphere map), the four continents, a second map of Europe, 37 maps of Germany and the Low Countries, 19 maps of various European countries (including the British Isles and Russia), 4 maps of Middle-Eastern and Asian regions, one map of the Straits of Magellan and one (no. 64) of the Florida coast, the Caribbean and Central America (Koeman I, Bl. 5, no. 178). The van Loon contains 37 NAVIGATIONAL CHARTS OF THE MAJOR EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN SEA AND COASTAL ROUTES OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY, including 10 maps of the Americas, of which 5 show regions now belonging to the United States (including 2 of California as an island). The latest identifiable map dates from 1665, and the atlas was probably issued shortly thereafter (the Blaeu printing-house burned down in 1672, and Jan Blaeu died a year later). With the exception of the pasted down Donckert charts and the 2 van Loon Mediterranean maps, which are on heavier paper, the maps are printed on the same paper stock (no discernible watermark). It is possible that the general title-page, unrecorded by Koeman, was reserved for small issues and perhaps even for single composite atlases commissioned by individual customers.
