BLAEU, Johannes (1596-1673). Novum Italiae theatrum sive accurata descriptio ipsius urbium, palatorium, sacrarum medium, &c . Ed. R.C. Alberts. The Hague: Rutger Christoffel Alberts, 1725. 4 volumes, large 2° (536 x 345mm). Mounted on guards throughout as issued. Titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes. Engraved headpiece to dedication in vol.I, 4 frontispieces, 277 engraved maps, plans, views and other plates, as listed in the tables; and 3 maps and 4 views not listed. (Koeman Bl 105 call for 8 extra plates in vol. 3 not accounted for; vol. I with repaired tear to folding view of Genoa, folding view of the Duomo in Milan shaved at lower margin, vol. III with occasional light browning to plates, vol.IV with one plate appreciably browned, plate numbered LXI, a view of the Piazza Navona, with two short tears from the lower margin just affecting the image.) Contemporary English red morocco gilt, covers with borders composed of fillets and two decorative rolls, one including dolphins, surrounding a large central lozenge composed of massed volute and flower-head tools enclosing a central star, spine in eight compartments with raised bands, green morocco lettering-pieces in two, the others with a repeat pattern composed of various flower and volute tools (neat repairs to joints and head and foot of spines, some discolouration to leather of covers). Provenance : Dukes of Devonshire (Chiswick House armorial bookplate). A FINE SET of Alberts's late issue of Blaeu's Italian town books, with a distinguished English provenance. This copy is a variant of Koeman's Bl 103-6 with some additional plates, but without the plates mentioned by Koeman in parenthese (these plates not listed in the index of volume III). The work comprises: Vol. I: frontispiece, general double-page map of Italy, 78 plans, maps and plates including views of Lombardy, Florence and Sienna, 59 double-page, 4 folding. Vol. II: frontispiece, 75 plans, maps and plates including views of Tuscany and the Papal States, 64 double-page, pl. 2 misbound in vol. 4; and one extra map. Vol. III: frontispiece, additional double-page map of southern Italy, 37 plans, maps and plates of the kingdom of Naples and Sicily, 26 double-page and 2 folding, a panorama of Naples; and 2 additional double-page numbered and asterixed views. Vol. IV: frontispiece, 87 plans, maps and plates including views and plans of Rome, 25 folding, 37 double-page. (4)
