BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638). Nova totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac hydrographica Tabula. Amsterdam, ca. 1630. Engraved world map, fully colored by a contemporary hand, image 411 x 545 mm (464 x 588 mm sheet). Within a border of allegorical representations of the sun and the moon and the five known planets, four panels along the side illustrate the elements and the seasons, and seven vignettes of the seven wonders of the world along the bottom, French text on verso. (Some light darkening and marginal staining.) A classic single-sheet world map on Mercator's projection, first issued by Willem Blaeu in 1606. It remained in circulation for 50 years and is "celebrated as one of the supreme examples of the map maker's art" (Shirley). This is the 4th state with "Terra del Fuego" now an island, "Fretum le Maire" added and the title now concludes "auct: Guiljelmo Blaeuw." Shirley 255.
