Engraved title, 101 double-page engraved maps of France, Spain, Italy, Asia and the Americas, one folding, 2 engraved maps of Corsica and Sardinia in the text, French text. (Some light staining and soiling to margins, folding map of the Holy Roman Empire torn and frayed, approximately another 20 maps with tears along folds, a few other marginal tears, some gatherings detached.) Original publisher's vellum, panelled in gilt (stained, inner hinges split, stitching shaken). Sold not subject to return. AN UNRECORDED EDITION of volume II of the French edition of the Blaeu's Novus Atlas , dated 1638 and published in the last year of Willem Bleau's life. This copy collates according to the 1640 isssue of johannes and Cornelius Blaeu, as described by Koeman I Bl 17, but has the addition of a section of 14 Italian maps with text signatures A-Q2, bound in after the maps of Spain. Unlike the Koeman description this copy does not have the 4 inserted maps from the Appendix (numbers 53,54,65,84) and has no title to the second part. The 14 new maps of Italy have Latin titles and French text, and comprise 7 maps previously published in the Appendix (cf. Bl 3 10-15), the 7 other maps being Sicilia Regnum, Regno di Napoli, Stato della Chiesa, Dominio Veneto, Corsica, Sardinia, and Karstia (the last three maps were first published by Blaeu in the German edition of the Novus Atlas, volume I, 1634).
