BLAKE, William (1757-1827, illustrator) -- YOUNG, Edward (1683-1765). The Complaint and the Consolation; or, Night Thoughts . London: R. Noble for R. Edwards, 1797 [on Whatman paper watermarked 1794].
BLAKE, William (1757-1827, illustrator) -- YOUNG, Edward (1683-1765). The Complaint and the Consolation; or, Night Thoughts . London: R. Noble for R. Edwards, 1797 [on Whatman paper watermarked 1794]. 4 parts in one volume, atlas 4° (409 x 296mm). 43 engravings by and after William Blake forming part-titles and borders to text. (Title a little thumb-soiled, some leaves trimmed with slight loss to engraved borders, some offsetting, occasional light browning and spotting, explanation leaf bound before title.) Contemporary straight-grained purple morocco, gilt edges (scuffing to covers, extremities rubbed). BLAKE'S MOST AMBITIOUS SERIES OF ILLUSTRATIONS TO THE WORK OF ANOTHER POET. Young's poem was divided into nine Nights. For the first four, Blake chose to engrave 43 illustrations from a much larger total of drawings in watercolour which he had been preparing since 1794 (the 'Explanation of the Engravings' is possibly by his friend and fellow artist, Fuseli). Contemporary purchasers of the work included Thomas Frognall Dibdin, William Godwin Crabb Robinson, Sir John Soane and Caroline Bowles [Southey]. That the published illustrations were never completed as planned was presumably owing to their imaginative dominance over Young's much more orthodox text. Bentley 515; Ray, The Illustrator and the Book 3.
