Boccaccio Giovanni . Genealogie... cum micantissimis arborum effigiationibus cuiusque gentilis dei progeniem . In-folio (mm 309x205). Carte [1], VI-CLXII. Xilografie a piena pagina all'inizio dei primi tredici libri dell'opera. Eleganti iniziali ornate xilografiche, a fondo criblé; alcune su 12 linee. Bell'esemplare, alcune carte uniformemente brunite. STC French, 71; Renouard, Inventaire chronologique II, 63, 24. Folio (309x205 mm). [1], VI-CLXII leaves. Full-page woodcuts at the begenning of the first thirteen volumes of the work. Woodcut decorated initials, on criblé ground; some on 12 lines. A fair copy, browning on some leaves. Foxing on the margins. Light waterstain and some spots on the outer blank margin of the last leaves. Small tear on the lower blank margin of fol.n3. Modern half-morocco, printed paper by antiphonary on the covers. Numerous marginal notes by early hand, of which one contemporary. On title page bibliographical note, by a eighteenth-century hand. Very rare Paris edition of the Geneaolgia deorum by Giovanni Boccaccio Printed for the first time by Vendelino da Spira in 1472 and from 1481 proposed together - as in our copy - with the text of De montibus silvis, fontibus liber. The diffusion of this work by Boccaccio in the french area is witnessed not only by the wide manuscript circulation of the text, but also by the previous version - probably by Laurent de Premierfait - appeared in Paris between 1498 and 1499, In order to make this rich repertoire of myths and fables of pagan antiquity more accessible. The Genealogia deorum was widely used by Geoffroy Tory in the famous Champfleury, and carefully studied by Pierre de Ronsard, Jean du Bellay and other exponents of Pléiade as an inexhaustible source of classic images. The volume imprinted in 1511 by the printer and bookstore Denis Roce - here associated with the Dutchman Ludwig Hornken, already active in Venice at Gregorio de Gregori - is distinguished by the elegance of the characters and the illustrative and decorative apparatus. STC French, 71; Renouard, Inventaire chronologique II, 63, 24.
