BODONI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA Manuale Tipografico . Parma: Vedute Bodoni, Presso la Vedova [Bodoni Press (Bodoni's widow and Luigi Orsi)], 1818. Two volumes, 20th century three-quarters vellum retaining 19th century spines, which are discreetly laid down so that at first glance they look integral to this copy; marbled sides, plain paper endsheets, top edges gilt. 12 x 8 1/2 inches (31 x 21.5 cm); half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait, title, 4 ff. dedication, [2], [I]-XXVII, [I], [I]-LXXII, [4] pp., 266 ff. (verso of final index leaf numbered 267); half-title, title, 272 ff., three folding sheets of music, 276-279 pp. are the indices. Some light binding wear, the portrait--not always present in the work and on a different paper--is rather foxed, but this is overall a rather fresh copy of this monumental example of fine typography. This is a large copy, with the fore-edges and lower margins uncut. Traces of an old stamp on the last front endsheet of both volumes, inked shelfmark on the half-titles; from the English bookseller Stanley Noble of Hornsey with his stock mark (sold 1970), an invoice to an American bookseller laid-in. Bodoni issued his first version of this work (in a far less extensive form) in 1788, but this posthumous publication (completed by Orsi, the director of the printing house at Parma, at the behest of Bodoni's widow) is generally considered his masterwork. It ranks among the very finest of typographic publications, a publisher's type-specimen that at the same time is a paragon of the Book Beautiful. A vast range of Roman, Greek, Cyrillic and exotic faces designed by Bodoni are represented in a wide assortment of sizes, accompanied by an extensive range of ornamental sorts. About 290 copies of the work were issued. Brooks 1216; Brunet I, 1027; Graesse I, p. 460. C
