BÖCKLER, Georg Andreas. Nützliche Hauss- und Feld-Schule. Das ist: Wie man ein Land-Feld-Guth und Meyerey mit aller Zugehöre ... mit Nutzen anordnen solle: Wobey dann auch zugleich eine zur Hausshaltung auf dem Lande nützliche Hauss-Artzney für Menschen und Viehe, samt allerhand nützlichen Hauss-Künsten ... an den Tag gegeben . Nuremberg: heirs of Paul Fürstens, printed by heirs of 2 Christoff Gerhards, 1683. Small 4° (199 x 159mm). Engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black, 76 engraved plates only, including 25 folding (lacks one or 2 plates, outer margin of 5E3 & 5E4 repaired, just touching a letter of text on 5E4 recto, printing flaw in 6F3 affecting a few letters, upper corner of 7X1 & 7X2 repaired just touching page no. on 7X1 recto, occasional spots). Contemporary calf, gilt floral border on sides with floral corner pieces and central floral motif, spine decorated gilt in compartments, raised bands, dated in second compartment 1686 with initials 'GS', clasps (gilt partly faded and rubbed away, a few scuff marks, rubbed). Provenance : Hammen, Stockholm (bookplate); Nils Sandberg (bookplate). Second edition, first published in 1678. The work not only discusses general husbandry but also deals with subjects such as how to grow a vine, distilling and how to make beer and wine. It contains a large cookery book (pp. 595ff.) listing numerous receipts such as how to make bread, soups, cook meat, fish, and vegetables, and also includes receipts for baking and preserving fruit. Another part of the book discusses wine and which herbs to use for medicinal purposes. cf. Simon BG 217 (first edition); cf.Weiss 433 (first edition); cf.Wellcome II, p. 186 (later edition).
