Boer War, Sir William Selby Church (1837-1928) Archive of Manuscript and Typed Material Related to Church's Visit to South Africa in 1900. Including four autograph letters signed by Church, written to his sisters; two photographs: one of thirteen Boer Commando fighters, the other taken at a camp religious service at Kroonstad, with the backs of many kneeling solders before a group of tents, each 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.; two typed reports on hospitals in Cape Town and Simon's Town, the text of each on onion-skin paper, with handwritten title covers on Hospitals Commission paper, bound with brass brads, each 13 x 8 in.; [with] typed copies of twelve very extensive letters written by Church to his wife, between August 5 and October 27, 1900, 134 leaves, all typed on rectos only, each letter labeled and individually held together with a single brad in the upper left corner, 8 x 10 in. Dr. Church was sent to South Africa as part of a Royal Commission appointed to investigate allegations regarding the condition of hospitals in South Africa, and their care and treatment of the sick and wounded who were being treated there during the Boer War.
