A TRIBUTE TO A CLOSE ALLY IN THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE . On hearing of Sutherland’s arrival in Venezuela [at Maracaibo, ‘ lo que ciertamente me ha sido muy agradable ’], and the pleasure he would feel in seeing him if possible, Bolívar writes a tribute to Sutherland’s father, whom he accounted one of his best friends and whose loss weighs heavily on him (' su muerte me ha sido en estremo dolorosa ’). He goes on to ask if the Gran Colombian government has acknowledged the debt it owes him for the role he played in winning independence for that state: ‘ Jamas he podido olvidar que él ha sido uno de mis mejores amigos. Deseo saber si el Gobierno de Colombia ha reconocido la deuda que contrajo con el … en la habilitacion de nuestras primeras espediciones ’. The English merchant, Robert Sutherland (d.1819) was a key supporter of Bolívar who had supplied vital financial support, as well as munitions and manpower, in the fight for independence. His son, Robert, served as a junior officer in the British army before being appointed as British Consul in Maracaibo.
