BONAPARTE, Charles Lucien (1803-1857). American Ornithology; or, the Natural History of Birds Inhabiting the United States not Given by Wilson . Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1825-1833. 4 volumes, 2 o (395 x 305 mm). 27 hand-colored engraved plates. (Some spotting and browning.) Contemporary red half morocco, uncut (a bit rubbed). Provenance : Jared P. Kirtland, Cleveland, Ohio (bookplates). FIRST EDITION of Bonaparte's continuation of Wilson, treating 60 birds supposedly not treated in the original work. The actual account of new specimens is somewhat less, as Bonaparte was basing his descriptions on different plumages of some species. This set has the second issue of vol. 1, with the Carey & Lea imprint.
