Lithographic portrait on india paper, mounted, of Napoleon-Louis by Martini; 17 lithographic plates by Princess Charlotte (13 after Prince Napoleon-Louis, 11 of these with figures by Robert), 13 on india paper, mounted, two smaller-format etched plates by Princess Charlotte. Contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco, covers elaborately tooled and blocked in gilt and blind, spine in five compartments with raised bands, lettered in one 'Dessins de Louis Napoléon', the others tooled in gilt, contemporary grey front wrapper lettered 'N.L.B.' [Napoléon-Louis Bonaprte]. Provenance : M.-J. Motier, arquis de Lafayette (1757-1834, presentation inscription 'À Monsieur le général Lafayette de la part de la P sse Charlotte'); Lafayette de Beaumont (inscription dated 1894). LAFAYETTE'S COPY of Princess Charlotte's rare lithographs, including several views of North America. The subjects are generally unidentified Italianate landscapes, but do include three identified lithographs (two of Rome and a view of Monte Forato) and two leaves of identified etchings (the first with seven vignette views on one plate with the general title Vues d'Amerique , the second with two views on one plate, titled Peuplier planté par Thomas Paine Point Breeze and Le Pont des Sauvages Point-Breeze and dated 1826). Napoléon-Louis, son of Louis Bonaparte (King of Holland), married his cousin Charlotte, daughter of Joseph Bonaparte (King of Spain), in 1825. A very rare set in fine condition.
