BONIFACE VIII (?1235-1303), pope from 1294. Liber sextus decretalium . – Clementarius materia. – Extravagantes communes. -- Extravagantes xx. Joh. xxii . Lyon: Nicolaus de Benedictis, October-December, 1511. Small 4° (210 x 143mm). Printed in red and black, printer’s device on each title and on H6v of third tract, first tract 2 full-page woodcuts in red and black and large woodcut depicting the presentation of the book to the Pope, which is repeated in second tract, with the final blanks of tracts 2-4, ornamental initials. (First gathering including title tipped-in on front endpaper, first title a little soiled, some leaves with light marginal waterstaining.) Contemporary calf over wooden boards, lavishly stamped in black with floral motifs and fleur-de-lys in between triple fillet parallel lines, brass clasps (rebacked, leather ties of clasps renewed, rear cover quite scuffed). Provenance : Albertus Crantzius (old inscription on first title) – H.V. Nobelbeck (old inscription on first title) – scored inscription at head of first title. A GOOD COPY OF THE RARE 1511 LYON EDITION : another edition was printed in Paris in the same year. The work contains the life of Boniface (leaves 275-276) not called for in Adams. Bound in at the back are two old manuscript leaves. Adams B-2432; Panzer VIII, 296.170.
