The art dealer Ambroise Vollard had begun dabbling in book publishing in the 1890s, issuing a few albums of prints by Bonnard, Maurice Denis and other artists, when he became interested in the possibility of publishing a work of poetry illustrated by a contemporary artist. For this undertaking he determined to use the Garamond italic, "'that magnificent type engraved by order of Francis I'" (Strachan, p. 40, citing Vollard), which was the property of the Imprimerie Nationale, who consented to print the projected work. According to his autobiography, a chance encounter with Verlaine on top of an omnibus led to his choice of text, which he planned to illustrate with woodcuts by Lucien Pissarro When Pissarro's father Camille expressed disapproval of the association, Vollard turned to Bonnard, who agreed to illustrate the text with lithographs. "Working directly on proofs from the the Imprimerie Nationale, which almost achieve Sheridan's prescription of 'a rivulet of text in a meadow of margin', Bonnard adorned nearly every page with 108 supremely graceful lithographs in rose sanguine" (Ray, p. 504). But perhaps the officials at the Imprimerie had not bothered to read Verlaine's text: "After a few copies of Parallèlement had been distributed, the Ministry of Justice demanded that the entire edition be returned. 'It is considered inadmissible', [Vollard] was told, 'that a book banned on moral grounds should be republished in a cover ornamented with the effigy of the republic, and that the title page should bear the inscription: By special permission , etc." (Ray, p. 498, citing Vollard). The book was recalled, the privilege leaf was suppressed, and the offending wrapper and title were reprinted (as was the incorrectly printed leaf bearing the half-title and edition statement), a woodcut ornament being substituted for the wood-engraved effigy of the republic. A few copies of the original issue were retained, of which this is one. The book, with its marvelous blending of illustration and text, was ahead of
