Engraved throughout: title, text leaves, double-page plate of an armillary sphere and 35 double-page engraved maps with contemporary hand-color in outline. Late 18th-century red morocco gilt, central coat-of-arms of Louis-Joseph de France (Olivier 2530, fer 8) on sides, triple fillet border, spine in 7 compartments gilt, edges gilt. Provenance : Louis-Joseph de France (1781-1789), second child and elder son of King Louis XVI of France and Marie Antoinette (binding). FIRST EDITION. The maps are numbered to 1-36 but no number 25 was issued according to the list of contents. The numbering of the plates skips number 28 and adds 34 bis . The titles of the maps are listed correctly. 17 of the maps are by Janvier, 8 by Rizzi-Zannoni, 6 by Bonne and the remainder are unsigned. There were later editions published in 1771-83 and 1787-91.
