Illuminated Latin manuscript on vellum, c. 12,5 x 8,8 cm, old cerise leather binding (rubbed, corners bumped), gilt spine on 4 raised bands, a.e.g. (faded), paper flylvs and endpapers (front flyleaf gone), [141] ff., 16 ll., expertly written in brown/black ink (some marg. soiling, i.a. on miniatures, occ. sm. stains, traces of use). In good condition
Text : Calendar; Hours of the Virgin; Penitential Psalms; Office of the Dead; litanies and prayers. Decoration : rubrics in red; numerous one- and two-line initials in gold on grounds of blue; large initials, 4 or 5 lines high, with blue or pink penwork; 12 fully decorated borders formed of small leaves with coloured flowers, some of the borders including birds, 9 of these borders with green, red, blue and yellow leaves; borders of f. [42]v with yellow background at top and bottom, and with bluish-grey background at left and right; border of f. [45]r with silver leaves on a blue background; border of f. [131]v partly on a yellow background; 2 partial borders at the end (ff. [137]r and [138]v). Illumination : 2 full-page miniatures on a green background, with figures in blue, pink, red or yellow, and in full borders matching the 9 decorative borders (as described above). Subjects: David in prayer in a landscape (f. 57v); the Raising of Lazarus (f. 87v - soiled), full-page arms of Croÿ-Renty . Provenance : Jacqueline du Luxembourg (- Saint-Pol) (1435-1511), in 1455 married to Philippe I de Croÿ (1435-1511), comte de Porcéan, and companion of Charles The Bold. Full-page arms of Croÿ-Renty on f. [13]v, smaller arms on ff. [42]v, [53]v, [87]v, [88]r; sm. arms of Luxembourg-Saint-Pol on f. [88]r and [110]v (both with fleur-de-lys), and, with Croÿ, in a lozenge on f. [57]v, [87]v. Small arms on ff. [14]r, [30]v, [38]v, [45]r, [47]v, [50]r deleted. Interesting, hardly known small Book of Hours from the household of Jacqueline du Luxembourg and Philippe I de Croÿ, probably for daily use at home or when travelling, and altogether of lower quality than the much larger and much more luxurious de Croÿ-Luxembourg Hours illuminated by the celebrated Parisian painter François.
