BOOK OF HOURS, Latin , use of Tours. [France (Loire Valley or Tours), last quarter of the fifteenth century.] ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, i + 69 leaves, [1 6 2 8 (-8) 3-5 8 6 8 (-1,2) 7 12 (-1,2) 8-9 8], 157 x 115 mm. (6 1/4 x 4 in.), written in dark brown ink in a neat bastarda script, ruled in red ink, single columns of 21 lines, justification (95 x 63 mm.), 13 LARGE MINIATURES AND 14 SMALL MINIATURES, 27 pages with three-sided geometrically panelled borders incorporating floral sprays on matte gold grounds and blue and gold foliate arabesques on natural grounds, numerous 1-4 line initials in matte gold on red, blue, or brown grounds, one 4- line initial in pink modelled in white on matte gold ground, rubricated. Lacking text after fol. 13, also possibly after fol. 37. Some flaking of pigment, a few marginal stains, occasional smudging of borders or text, four leaves with slight tears in margins. Binding Sixteenth-century green velvet over pasteboard, edges gilt, very worn, rebacked, four ties missing . Texts Calendar, with feasts of Tours, including the translation of St. Martin, in red, July 4 (fols. 1-6v). Obsecro to (fols. 7-8v). O intemerata (fols. 9-11). Gospel sequences (fols. 11-13v). Hours of the Virgin, use of Tours, interspersed with the Hours of the Cross and Hours of the Holy Spirit (fols. 14-43v). Penitential Psalms and Litany (fols. 44-53v). Off ice of the Dead (fols. 54-62v). Suffrages, addressed to the saints represented by miniatures (fols. 62v-68; fols. 68v-69v blank except for ruling).
