Whinfield, bought at Venice Jan.1879, on the flyleaf TEXT: This is a very rare liturgical use. Leroquais does not record any book of hours for the use of Coutances. St.Brendan appears in the litany, possibly as the patron saint of sailors. The texts comprise (f.1) a calendar; (f.13) Hours of the Virgin, Matins; (f.25) Lauds; (f.40) Terce; (f.43) Sext; (f.46) None; (f.49v) Vespers; (f.51v) Compline; (f.56v) various prayers; (f.59) Hours of the Cross; (f.62v) Hours of the Holy Ghost; (f.65v) Suffrages; (f.69) Suscipe domine sancte Pater omnipotens ; (f.71) Penitential Psalms and Litany; (f.103v) Office of the Dead; (f.138) O intemerata ; (f.142v) Prayer attributed to St.Gregory; (f.152) Short Gospel extracts. DECORATION: This manuscript is the product of a very provincial Northern French artist at an early period of book illustration in Normandy. He seems totally uninfluenced by any of the workshops active in Rouen at that time. The subjects of the miniatures are: folio 13. The Annunciation. The Virgin and the angel side by side in a chamber with a patterned green floor, red-brown background with gold scrollwork, and a gold-blue-red diapered ceiling (a little smudged) folio 59. The Crucifixion. The Virgin and St.John standing below the crucified Christ, in a green field, with red-brown background with gold scrollwork folio 62v. Pentecost. The Virgin and Apostles in a field, landscape with trees at back folio 71. David praying to God above, in a garden, outside a gothic colonnade, an arbour at back folio 103v. A funeral service, three mourners and 5 monks singing
