BOOK OF HOURS, use of Paris, in Latin and French, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, last quarter of the 14th century] 148 x 105 mm., 206 leaves + 3 ruled blank leaves at the beginning and 4 at end, APPARENTLY COMPLETE, collation: 1 2 , 2-22 8 , 23 6 , 24-25 8 , 26 2 + 2 , ruled in red, justification 81 x 56 mm., 13 lines, written in brown ink in a gothic textura, rubrics in red, versals and two-line initials in gold on blue and red ground with white tracery, similar line-fillers, 12 large or half-page miniatures, most with full baguette borders embellished with gold and blue ivy leaves on hairline stems. Modern antique-style morocco, edges gilt. PROVENANCE: Early inscription on first blank leaf 'Je este faicte le quatorziesme jour du Mois de Janveier 1401'. Later signature on verso of last leaf 'Collette de Lautrez'. The Calendar has saints for every day of the year, including all the usual Parisian saints and among others in red Avitus, Bishop of Auxerre (dup. 3 May), Margaret (20 July), Mary Magdalen (dup. 22 July), Avix (15 Sept.), Mahny (i.e. Matthew? 21 Sept.), Denis (9 Oct.), Eligius (1 Dec.). It is possible that the book was made for use in Auxerre. TEXT: f.1-12 Calendar; f.13 Gospel Sequences; f.26 Prayer in French 'O très certaine et perduraublement benoite' (Leroquais II 265); f.29 Hours of the Virgin, Matins; f.56 Lauds; f.70 Prime; f.77 Terce; f.82v Sext; f.87 None; f.92 Vespers; f.100 Compline; f.106 Prayers of Pope John xxiii and Boniface ii; f.109 Penitential Psalms; f.130 Hours of the Cross; f.133 Hours of the Holy Ghost; f.137 Office of the Dead; f.194 [Les quinze joies de la Vierge] Doulce dame de misericorde; f.204v Salve Regina; f.205 Suffrage to St. Sebastian; f.206 Prayer to St. Catherine (the last two appear to have been added slightly later). DECORATION: The book is illustrated by two artists, the first responsible for the Annunciation and the second who executed all other miniatures. The figures in the Annunciation are more graceful than the others, with expressive gestures. Both artists are fond of long flowing drapery and patterned backgrounds. The second artist paints mostly elongated figures entirely in grisaille. There is little doubt that the manuscript emanates from a Paris workshop. THE SUBJECTS OF THE MINIATURES ARE: folio 29. The Annunciation. The Virgin standing beneath a golden canopy, the angel at her right, God looking down, with blue background of golden scrolled palmettes. Two angels in the upper cusps of the border, a swan bas-en-page, faces and birds in the border folio 70. Nativity. The Virgin lying in bed, Joseph standing at her side, both in grisaille, a cow and an ass looking at the Child in a rose crib folio 77. Annunciation to the Shepherds. A half-page miniature. Three shepherds, body colour in a field, the angel above folio 82v. Adoration of the Magi. The Virgin holding the Child, Joseph seated below, receiving the three Kings, all in grisaille, against a grid-patterned rose background folio 87. Presentation in the Temple. Three figures of the Virgin, Anna and the priest, all in grisaille, a background of gold palmettes on red folio 92. Massacre of the Innocents, Herod on his throne pointing at two soldiers killing two children with their swords. A grid-patterned rose background folio 100. The Flight into Egypt. Virgin and Child riding through the rose gate of a city, Joseph leading them. Blue-patterned background. A winged dragon at head of border folio 109. Salvator Mundi. Christ in grisaille cloak holding a golden globe in one hand, pointing at the Chalice of the Eucharist with the other. Ornamented grid-patterned background folio 129v. Crucifixion. The Holy Dove in blue sky above, heavenly rays in multi-coloured waves cascading down. folio 137v. A Funeral Service, three
