Book of Hours, Use of Paris, in Latin and French, illuminated manuscript on vellum [northern France (Paris), c.1415] 143 leaves (plus 1 endleaf at front and back), 210mm. by 150mm., wanting 2 bifolia from the fifth gathering, 2 leaves after fol.78 and a single leaf after 109 and a leaf or two from end, else complete, collation: i12, ii6, iii-iv8, v4 (2 outer bifolia wanting), vi-x8, xi6 (i and ii wanting), xii-xiv8, xv7 (ii wanting), xvi-xviii8, xix4, horizontal catchwords, 15 lines in dark brown ink in a fine and angular gothic bookhand, rubrics in red, one-line initials in burnished gold on pink or blue grounds heightened with white tracery, line-fillers to match, two-line initials in pink or blue on gold grounds, often enclosing coloured foliage, each page of text and Calendar with single coloured text border edged in gold with full or three-quarter borders of delicate single line rinceaux terminating in coloured flowers and gold ivy leaves, sixteen small miniatures comprising twelve Calendar scenes of the Occupations of the Months in multilobed compartments in the lower margins and four rectangular miniatures of the evangelists writing (fols.13r, 14r, 15v and 17r), ten large miniatures by the Boucicaut Master (fols.19r, 42r, 52v, 58v, 63r, 67v, 72r, 85r, 103v and 115v), above 3-line coloured initials enclosing foliage on brightly burnished gold grounds, and within full borders of fleshy acanthus leaves with gold undersides, sprouting from ornamental flowerpots in the bas-de-page, terminating in gold flowers and detailed cone-like buds and enclosing numerous birds, four with wide border frames of coloured intertwining foliage on gold bars on three sides, a small hole in fol.9, some small stains throughout, occasional minor flaking to areas of miniatures (faces on fol.42r with spots of retouching), else in excellent condition with wide and clean margins, traces of original painted edges in floral designs within scrolling compartments, old red velvet (worn in places) over wooden boards, perhaps fundamentally original, brass clasps and catches
