Linneaus begins: "Having been appointed by the Royal Academy of Sciences to travel through Lapland, for the purpose of investigating the three kingdoms of Nature in that country, ..." The journey to Lapland was funded by the Royal Academy (of his native Sweden) in 1732 not only to find new plants, animals and minerals (not a kingdom!), but also to learn about the native Sami (Lapp) people. It is said that during this journey he had a flash of insight into classification of quadrupeds, that would later become part of Systema Naturae (1735). Boards separated, missing leather corners. Scattered foxing, but very little toning. Provenance: Property from the Collection of Jane D. Diehl, Cincinnati, OH Condition: All with toning and foxing. Extensive insect damage on a few volumes (mostly affecting leather).
