BORDONE, Benedetto (?1445-1460 - 1539). Isolario … Ricorretto et di nuovo ristampato con la gionta del Monte del Oro novamente ritrovato . Venice: Francesco di Leno, [1547?]. Early edition of one of the most popular illustrated guides to the 'islands and peninsulas' of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Far East . The three double-page maps depict the Mediterranean Sea and Europe, the Aegean Sea, and a world map (Shirley World 59), the double-page bird’s-eye view depicts Venice. The work is particularly notable for its wide scope, with the inclusion of recent discoveries in the Americas, for its well-known plan of the city of Mexico (‘Temistitan’) before its destruction by Cortez, for its world map on an oval projection, cited as the first of its kind, although perhaps attributable to Francesco Rosselli and for the earliest printed individual European map of Japan. Adams B-2485 (earlier editions); Alden 547.2; Harvard/Mortimer Italian , 82 (1534 edition); Phillips Atlases 164; Sabin 6421; Shirley World 83 (1528 edition). Folio (299 x 206 mm). Title within large woodcut border, 3 double-page maps, 1 double-page bird’s-eye view, c.100 woodcut illustrations and initials (marginal repairs to the title-page, a few leaves reinforced at gutter, some spotting, heavier in places, occasional light waterstaining, minor worm track to the gutter in a couple of quires). Contemporary limp vellum (soiled, minor repairs to end-leaves). Provenance : donative inscription ‘R[everendissim]us L M S[?antoro] [?Pe]corella dedit’ (possibly Fr Santoro Pecorella, 1554-1631, Paul V’s Apostolic Vicar, partly eroded inscription on title) – old ink shelfmark to verso of front free end-paper – ‘S[anctae] M[aria]e Panormi[tanae]’ (?Monastero di Santa Maria Nuova, Palermo, 19th-century ink stamp, largely faded, to title and to the woodcut on p. xxiv verso ).
