BORIS ARTZYBASHEFF (1899-1965) YOUR EXTRA WAR BOND / SMACK THEM AGAIN, BROTHER. 1944. 43x21 inches, 109x53 cm. Wickwire Spencer Steel Company, New York. Condition B+ / B: tear at bottom edge, affecting text; minor tears along vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. Artzybasheff was a Russian émigré who worked in America as an illustrator. Specifically remembered for his magazine illustrations and covers, he worked profusely for Time , Life and Fortune magazines, he also illustrated books and did commercial design work. During the Second World War he worked with the U.S. Department of State as part of the of Psychological Warfare branch. His work, which combines surrealism and anthropomorphism, is immediately recognizable and striking.
