ARGENSOLA, Lupercio (1559-1613) and Bartholomé Leonardo (1562-1631) de. Rimas . Saragossa: en el Hospital Real i General de nuestra Señora de Gracia, 1634. 4° (203 x 142mm). (Some very light browning or spotting at end, tiny wormhole in first several leaves touching an occasional letter.) Contemporary limp vellum. Provenance : early manuscript index on front free endpaper and occasional marginal annotation. FIRST EDITION. Palau 323918; Salva 2006. Three important works of Spanish literature. The first two volumes are by the main proponents of the Aragonese school of poetry. Led by the Argensola brothers, the school opposed the prevailing culteranismo with its artificial style, classical allusion and Latinate syntax, in preference for a more natural and sober style. Francisco Borja was a friend and ally of the Argensolas, and his epic poem celebrated the 15th-century conquest of Naples by his ancestor, Alonso V of Aragon. Suarez's collection of 20 essays on various subjects joins his earlier important pastoral novel, El Passagero , as a biting record of contemporary Spanish society. (3)
