Borjes, Juan Álvarez (fl. circa 1680) Practica y Observaciones Pertenecientes al Arte de Albeyteria. Madrid: Por Juan Garcia Infançon, 1680. First edition, quarto, title page printed within a border of type ornaments, ¶4, ¶¶4, A-Z4, Aa-Bb4, Cc2, A-F4; one nearly full-page text woodcut illustration; bound in full limp parchment, leaves professionally washed and neatly mended with pulp-fill repairs to title with pen facsimile reconstitutions of some border type ornaments, 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in. Borjes (sometimes Borges) was born in Portugal and had his career in Spain as a veterinarian specializing in equine care. In this practical guide on the art of horse medicine, he describes a strong ointment of his own formulation composed of euphorbia, black hellebore, butter, oil, and wax which served as both disinfectant and protective dressing for wounds. Two related treatises are appended: Francisco de la Reyna's Arte de Herrar, and Juan de Vinuesa's Arte de Herrar Viejo.
