BOURNE, John C. and John BRITTON (1771-1857). Drawings of the London and Birmingham Railway, by John C. Bourne, with An Historical and Descriptive Account by John Britton F.S.A. London: J.C. Bourne, Ackermann and Co. and C. Tilt, 1839. 2° (545 x 365mm). Lithographic title, 29 lithographic plates by Bourne, two maps on one sheet engraved from Cheffins's Official Map (plates 7 and 8 partially detached, light browning to plate 14). Later half green morocco gilt with original brown cloth boards with title enclosed in ornate gilt panel surmounted by the arms of the cities of London and Birmingham (small area of waterdamage across upper board). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION with particularly large margins, described by Abbey as 'a magnificent example of the finest type of lithographed illustration'. Bourne's illustrations of the Journey are arranged in topographical order, starting from London, and are accompanied by text by Britton, an accomplished topographer, antiquarian and writer known for Beauties of Wiltshire [1801-1825] and The Beauties of England and Wales .
