A Chinese export bowl with American Eagle at center, 5.5 in. dia., housed in protective frame. With the following written inscription on back of frame: So called "Lowestoft" china used by Levi Woodbury in Washington, D.C. when he was a Justice of the Supreme Court of U.S.A. Given to me by Cousin Walter Woodbury David. 1960. Mary Louise McNeely. Levi Woodbury (1789-1851) was one of the few individuals who served in all three branches of the U.S. Government, including Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of the Treasury, U.S. Senator, and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Woodbury was the first Justice to have attended law school. He also attempted to run for President of the United States twice. The lot is accompanied by a Xerox copy of a 2010 affidavit stating that it was purchased from the Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith Estate.
