BOYLE, Robert, 5th Earl of Cork and Orrery (1707-62). Verses by a young Nobleman, on the Death of His Grace the Duke of B-- [Edmund Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham]. [London: 1736]. Collation: A 4 (A1r ornamental headpiece, drop-title, text, A8v ornamental tailpiece). 4 leaves, paginated. [ Bound with :] Robert BOYLE. A poem to the memory of Edmund Sheffield . Dublin: George Faulkner 1741. Collation: A 8 (A1r half-title, A2r title, A3r dedication to Katherine, Duchess of Buckingham, A3r woodcut headpiece, factotum initial, title heading and text, A8 advertisement). 6 leaves (of 8 leaves, lacking the first and last leaves, containing half-title and advertisement), paginated from A3r. 2 works in one volume, 8° (199 x 127mm). Interleaved with 32 leaves paginated 1-64, including a 4 1/2-page preface by Orrery discussing the two works and their publication. Contemporary Irish red morocco gilt, sides lettered 'A Poem on. Edmund Duke. of Buckingham.' within wide roll-tool border containing crowns, spine gilt in compartments with bird-on-branch and other small tools, marbled endleaves, gilt edges (joints slightly split and rubbed). Provenance : Robert Boyle, 5th Earl of Cork and Orrery (signature, MS preface, annotations), presented to: Lucy Boyle (daughter of Robert Boyle (her inscription recording the gift from her father, 1 May 1756, Cork and Orrery Library sale, Christie's, 21-23 November 1905, lot 341 to Sparks); Maggs Brothers, purchased by; A.W.W. Rosenbach, June 1920, sold to; Carl H. Pforzheimer Library; Dr. Slater (acquired April 1978, sold Christie's New York, 12 February 1982, lot 26). FIRST EDITION, PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE DUCHESS OF BUCKINGHAM for presentation to her friends, together with the second authorized edition. As Orrery states in his autograph preface to this volume, his verses on the death of the Duke of Buckingham were first privately printed in London for the Duchess of Buckingham. He lightly complains that Buckingham's name is not printed in full in that edition, since the poem so clearly honours the Duke; the Duke of Buckingham (and Orrery as author) is named in succeeding editions. Orrery also states that the second copy in the present volume was printed from a copy given by Orrery to Faulkner at Dublin at Faulkner's repeated request; it is 'by much the most correct (for there is one in Folio) of any extant.' Foxon records only one other copy of the privately printed edition, at the University of Cincinnati, and another interleaved copy annotated by Orrery of Faulkner's 1741 edition survives at Princeton University Library. Foxon B-354 and B-355.
